Spore lids allow you to insert a needle through a port to inject spore water or extract liquid culture without creating an airlock while preventing contamination. The purpose of the washers is to create space between two Tyvek cut outs so water doesn't cross both Tyvek barriers and impede air flow. The Tyvek cut outs allow air to pass but prevent contamination.
These spore lids take about an hour to make and cost almost nothing, so we recommend making your own. But if you would rather purchase premade spore lids, you can find them on Amazon by searching for spore lids. They come in plastic or traditional metal, wide mouth or normal mouth size and cost between $3-4 a piece. Make sure you choose the correct size lid for your pint mason jars.
Drill
1/4" inch drill bit
Scissors
Pen or pencil
Needle nose pliers
Tyvek envelope
Q-tip
Nitrile gloves
Small cardboard box
With the lid still screwed on to the jar, drill two holes opposite of each other in the lid.
Remove lid and use the needle nose pliers to trim leftover pieces of the lid from the bottom edges of each drilled hole.
Trace two circles on the Tyvek envelope with pen or pencil around a washer and cut out the circle with scissors.
Place enough silicone on the bottom of the lid around one hole to cover the washer and make sure there is an opening that lets air pass through the hole.
Place one washer on the bottom of the lid so the hole of the washer lines up with the hole in the lid.
Place enough silicone on top of the freshly placed washer to cover the washer and stick one Tyvek cut out over the washer. When placing the Tyvek cut out, press your finger in the middle of the Tyvek cut out first so silicone will be pushed outward then gently press the edges to create a seal. Use the Q-tip to spread the silicone and to remove excess silicone from the hole.
Follow steps 4-6 again for the same hole on top of the jar. When you are done with this step, you should have one open hole and one covered hole with washers and Tyvek cut outs on both sides.
Place enough silicone on the bottom and the top of the open hole to fully cover the hole and the edges. This will be the port you use with the needle.
Cut a 2" inch slit with scissors in the box then slide the lid in the slit for drying. Allow to dry overnight.
